Senior Vice President, Engineering
Tom Hughes is the senior vice president of engineering at TerraPower, where he is responsible for engineering processes, resources and methods to advance technologies through the design process. He works closely with the senior vice president of fuels and project development and the senior vice president of innovation to coordinate resources and priorities to advance the TWR, MCFR, and innovation projects.
Hughes comes to TerraPower with more than 35 years of experience in the nuclear industry, with specific experience in engineering, project management, quality assurance, and startup for commercial power and DOE facilities.
Most recently, Hughes had the role of manager of production engineering for Bechtel, specifically for the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant. In this role, he was responsible for managing all engineering, including interface with the construction subcontractors and startup team, and overseeing the cost, schedule and quality of engineering deliverables.
Prior to his role as manager of production engineering, Hughes held several other positions of increasing responsibility at Bechtel including senior electrical engineer, startup engineer, project engineer, quality assurance manager and project engineering manager. In these roles, he worked both in new design and construct of nuclear power plants and modifications to existing operating plants.
Hughes holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University and has taken business administration courses at Kutztown University. He is also a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and Washington and holds a Six Sigma Champion certification.
