Mike Shaqqo is the project director focusing on TerraPower’s deployment of the TWR technology. He brings considerable project management, engineering, strategy and execution experience to TerraPower.
Shaqqo spent twenty-seven years at Westinghouse, concluding his tenure in the role of director of new plants project development. There, he worked on the design completion and engineering of the AP1000. As vice president of engineering, he directed day-to-day operations of the organization, responsible for first-of-a-kind design completion. He shaped roles and responsibilities to transition the engineering focus from design to site implementation and enhanced performance metrics to ensure financial objectives were met while driving contractual milestone commitments.
His involvement at Vogtle 3&4 established a world-class technical services organization and aligned procurement and construction needs. Under Shaqqo’s direction, the design and licensing teams supported plant construction and commodity procurement through effective and timely resolution of design and licensing issues.
From 2002 to 2005, Shaqqo served as the operations manager for the Nivelles Service Center in Belgium. His organization supported outage maintenance, refueling, steam generator, pump and motor services for approximately 35 nuclear plants across Europe. He doubled operational capacity during this assignment through expanded use of robotics and by adding on-site tooling maintenance. His early career experience providing maintenance and inspection services for operating plants created a solid foundation for increasing responsibilities throughout his professional life.
Shaqqo holds a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Tennessee. He is Six Sigma certified and received the George Westinghouse Signature Award.
