TerraPower Gains Insight from India Trip

Executives from TerraPower™ recently returned from India where the team continued ongoing meetings with energy experts and investors to listen, learn and discuss options for advanced nuclear concepts. Our welcoming hosts share our commitment to accelerate the scientific findings needed to achieve secure, affordable and emissions-free energy production. India’s experts in the nuclear industry provided us valuable insight into the leading edge of nuclear energy technology in their country.

Among various power stations and research facilities, leaders and experts at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research(IGCAR) in Kalpakkam, shared their experiences and research with the TerraPower delegation. BARC is home to eight research and test reactors, and carries out much of India’s advanced research in nuclear fuels and materials. IGCAR has one of the world’s centers for sodium-cooled reactor expertise through operation of the sodium-cooled Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), and boasts unique capabilities for prototyping, testing and sampling. They also have robotic maintenance trials underway that would benefit future sodium reactor operations. In addition, TerraPower representatives met with executives from investors to discuss potential investment opportunities in TerraPower and its projects.

TerraPower’s team is grateful for their hosts’ openness in sharing their resources and time in the many cities they visited. The team members enjoyed learning about India’s advances in nuclear reactor research, and exploring advanced concepts, such as the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), under development at BARC and IGCAR.
